We need your help!
A group of artists from Akanko Ainu Kotan, a settlement in Hokkaido that is the epicenter of traditional Ainu crafts will be launching a crowdfunding project in February and they need your support! The project will feature traditional Arita-ware plates (Japan’s oldest porcelain ware) adorned with traditional Ainu patterns.
About Ainu Crafts
The Ainu people are the native people of Japan, now residing mostly in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s 4 major islands. They have a culture that dates back millennia, born from a lifestyle in harmony with nature. Among traditional Ainu culture lives a rich tradition of crafts, including wood carving, textiles, embroidery, and more featuring unique patterns and designs.
Traditional Ainu crafts are individually crafted by hand and take quite a bit of time to complete, making mass production impossible. To overcome this barrier, this special collaboration project with a kiln in Arita, Saga Prefecture was dreamed up so that more people around the world will be able to enjoy traditional Ainu designs in their everyday lives. However, the collaboration will only become a reality if enough backers support the project and help it reach its funding goal.
Unique plates designed by five different artists are planned. These plates will be a stunning fusion of traditional Arita porcelain with Ainu patterns that can’t be found anywhere else!
The first set will feature three designs carved into wood using traditional techniques and transferred onto the plates.
The second set is by an artist named Fukiko Goukon who has created three designs that will be painted onto a set of three small plates.
The third set is by an artist named Erika Katsuya who has also created three designs that will be painted to a set of three small plates.
